STORY: RHYS

Prior to starting The Prince’s Trust Achieve programme, Rhys was underachieving, had low self-esteem and had no future aspirations. Having experienced difficulties during her childhood and challenges with her mental health, she rarely left the house and was very anxious and quiet.

In 2020, Rhys’ mental health meant she missed out on school as she found it difficult to return to education. She struggled to make friends and engage with either primary or secondary education. But things began to change for Rhys once she enrolled on The Prince’s Trust Achieve programme.

During her first unit on the programme, Rhys set herself the target of having an 80% attendance score because she wanted to improve upon her Year 10 attendance of 13.5%. Her attendance soared to an average of 87% in the following months! She was extremely proud. Rhys now feels happy and optimistic about her future. She challenges herself to speak to other people and has learnt to express herself.

“Without The Prince’s Trust, I would never have found the confidence to make friends and I feel happy about attending college now.”

STORY: ABIOLA

Footballer Abiola was born in Nigeria but grew up in Dublin, where he played for Irish Premier Division side Shamrock Rovers. He also spent some time in America playing for Miami Dade FC and it was his experience there that led him to think about becoming more than just a player, and the idea behind Lola Sports.

For the last four years, Abiola has been based in Belfast where, with the help of the Prince’s Trust Enterprise programme, he has been able to launch and grow his business. “Although I knew a lot about the on-field stuff, it taught me so much about actually running a business and at the end I was amazed at how much I’d learned. But most importantly, The Trust made me feel proud of my idea, proud of my business.”
